About the Month of October
October combines a heavy work month with a highly social month-end. The fourth quarter is underway, budgets for the following year are drafted, and Halloween arrives with costumes, parties and school events that need preparing weeks in advance.
Columbus Day, also observed as Indigenous Peoples' Day in many states, falls on the second Monday and is a federal holiday. Halloween on the 31st closes the month, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month runs throughout October.

Where the Name "October" Comes From
From the Latin octo, meaning eight, from the days when the Roman year started in March.
The Roman calendar originally ran for ten months beginning in March, which is why the last four month names
still carry the Latin numbers seven through ten even though they now sit in positions nine through twelve. That
two-month offset is one of the oldest quirks still built into the calendar on your wall.

The weekday the 1st falls on changes every year, which is why a calendar printed for one year cannot be
