January carries two federal holidays: New Year's Day on the 1st, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday of the month, which many schools and federal offices observe as a day of service. Where the Name "January" Comes From

Named after Janus, the Roman god of doorways, beginnings and transitions, who was depicted with two faces — one looking back at the year that ended and one forward to the year ahead.

The Roman calendar originally ran for ten months beginning in March, which is why the last four month names still carry the Latin numbers seven through ten even though they now sit in positions nine through twelve. That two-month offset is one of the oldest quirks still built into the calendar on your wall.

Turn resolutions into scheduled blocks

A goal written on January 1 rarely survives February unless it appears on a calendar. Instead of writing "exercise more," block three specific 45-minute slots each week and print the month so those blocks are visible on the fridge. Seeing the commitment in ink makes it far harder to quietly skip.

Map the whole year before the month fills up

Use the first week of January to note the fixed points of your year: birthdays, anniversaries, school breaks, tax deadlines and planned vacations. Everything else can be arranged around those anchors, which prevents the scheduling collisions that usually surface in March.

Set a monthly review date

Pick one evening near the end of January and mark it as a review slot. Twenty minutes spent checking what worked and what slipped turns a printed calendar into an actual planning system rather than a wall decoration.
