2027 Long Weekends: Every Three-Day Weekend Next Year
A long weekend is the most efficient time off there is: three days away for zero vacation days. In 2027 the federal calendar hands American workers several of them, and a couple of well-placed single days can stretch a three-day weekend into a nine-day break. Here is the full map of the year.
Federal holidays that create a three-day weekend in 2027
Five federal holidays fall on a Monday in 2027, and each one automatically extends the weekend for anyone on a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Monday, January 18, 2027
- Presidents' Day — Monday, February 15, 2027
- Memorial Day — Monday, May 31, 2027
- Labor Day — Monday, September 6, 2027
- Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day — Monday, October 11, 2027
New Year's Day lands on Friday, January 1, 2027, which turns the very first weekend of the year into a three-day one as well.
Thanksgiving: the reliable four-day break
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 25, 2027. Although the Friday after is not a federal holiday, the overwhelming majority of American employers close or run a skeleton staff, which makes it the one predictable four-day weekend of the year. It is also the busiest travel period in the country — the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is consistently among the heaviest travel days of the year, and prices climb sharply from early November onward.
Holidays that fall on a weekend in 2027
Two federal holidays land on a Saturday and one on a Sunday in 2027, which changes when the day off actually happens:
- Juneteenth — Saturday, June 19, 2027, federally observed on Friday, June 18.
- Independence Day — Sunday, July 4, 2027, federally observed on Monday, July 5.
- Christmas Day — Saturday, December 25, 2027, federally observed on Friday, December 24.
Each of those observed dates produces another three-day weekend, so in practice 2027 is a generous year: nine separate three-day weekends before you use a single vacation day.
How to turn three days into nine
The classic move is to bridge a holiday with the working days around it. Booking the four working days between Christmas Eve (observed Friday, December 24, 2027) and New Year's Day gives you a break running from Saturday December 18 through Sunday January 2 for roughly four days of leave, depending on your employer's closure.
The same trick works around Independence Day. With July 4 observed on Monday July 5, taking Tuesday through Friday of that week produces a nine-day stretch from Saturday July 3 to Sunday July 11 for four vacation days.
Bridging works because holidays sit at the edge of a weekend. The vacation days you spend are the ones in the middle — the weekends on either side are free.
When to book
Airfare and accommodation for holiday weekends behave predictably. Memorial Day, Independence Day and Thanksgiving see prices rise steeply in the four to six weeks before the date, and the cheapest window is generally two to three months out. Because the dates above are fixed and published years in advance, there is no reason to be caught in the late-booking window.
Print the year and mark them
Long weekends are only useful if you notice them before everyone else books the same hotel. Print the 2027 calendar and circle the dates above, or open the 2027 holidays page for the complete list of federal holidays and observances with the weekday each one falls on.
