About the Month of May
May closes the school year across much of the country and opens the summer season socially. Graduations, recitals, sports finals and Memorial Day travel crowd into four short weeks, and families often find that May holds more individual commitments than any other month.
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is the month's federal holiday and the unofficial start of summer. Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday, Cinco de Mayo on the 5th, and graduation ceremonies cluster through the second half of the month.

Where the Name "May" Comes From
Named after Maia, the Roman goddess of growth and spring, associated with the flourishing of plants at this point in the year.
The Roman calendar originally ran for ten months beginning in March, which is why the last four month names still carry the Latin numbers seven through ten even though they now sit in positions nine through twelve. That two-month offset is one of the oldest quirks still built into the calendar on your wall.
