About the Month of December
December runs on two calendars at once: a compressed working month with year-end deadlines, and a social month full of gatherings, school performances and travel. Printing December early is the single most useful planning habit of the year, because the free days disappear faster than expected.
Christmas Day on the 25th is December's federal holiday. Christmas Eve, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa beginning on the 26th, the winter solstice around the 21st and New Year's Eve on the 31st fill the second half of the month with observances.

Where the Name "December" Comes From
From the Latin decem, meaning ten — December closed the original Roman calendar year.
The Roman calendar originally ran for ten months beginning in March, which is why the last four month names
still carry the Latin numbers seven through ten even though they now sit in positions nine through twelve. That
two-month offset is one of the oldest quirks still built into the calendar on your wall.
What Day Does December Start On?
The weekday the 1st falls on changes every year, which is why a calendar printed for one year cannot be
reused for the next. Here is how December lines up across nearby years.
| Year | December 1 falls on | Days in December | Working days |
| 2025 | Monday | 31 | 22 |
| 2026 | Tuesday | 31 | 22 |
| 2027 | Wednesday | 31 | 23 |
| 2028 | Friday | 31 | 20 |
| 2029 | Saturday | 31 | 20 |
| 2030 | Sunday | 31 | 21 |
Because the pattern shifts by one weekday each year (two after a leap year), the same month only repeats its
exact layout every six or eleven years.
How to Plan a Productive December
Count your real working days
Between holidays, closures and reduced staffing, December typically offers far fewer usable working days than its 31-day length suggests. Counting them on the grid changes what you commit to.
Fix the gathering dates first
School concerts, office parties and family meals compete for the same three weekends. Locking the fixed ones in before the month begins is what prevents the mid-December double-booking.
Set up January before the year ends
The last week of December is quiet enough to prepare the year ahead — print January, mark the known dates, and start the new year with a calendar that is already working.
