Should the Week Start on Sunday or Monday?

In the United States the week is almost always printed Sunday to Saturday, which is why our calendars default that way. Most of Europe, and the international ISO 8601 standard used by payroll and project software, treats Monday as the first day of the week instead.

The practical difference is where the weekend sits. A Sunday start splits Saturday and Sunday to opposite ends of the row; a Monday start keeps them together at the end, which many people find easier to read when planning work. Use the Week starts menu above the calendar to switch between the two — the printed and downloaded versions follow whichever you choose.

Week numbers

If your workplace refers to weeks by number ("week 32", "W32"), that numbering almost always follows ISO 8601: weeks run Monday to Sunday, and week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of January. Every month page on this site lists that month's exact week numbers with their date ranges.

Printing Tips That Actually Matter

Choose landscape

A month is seven columns wide. Portrait squeezes each day to around an inch; landscape gives roughly 50% more width per box — the difference between a calendar you can write on and one you can only look at.

Turn on background graphics

Browsers strip background colours by default, which removes the coloured header row and holiday highlights. Enable "Background graphics" (Chrome, Edge) or "Print backgrounds" (Firefox, Safari) in the print dialog. Leave it off deliberately if you want to save ink — our layouts stay readable in plain black.

Fit to page, minimum margins

If the right-hand column is clipped, set scale to "Fit to page width" and margins to minimum. That also maximises the writing space in every box.

Use heavier paper for wall calendars

Anything that will be written on daily for a month benefits from 24 lb / 90 gsm paper or above. Matte finish takes pen and pencil far better than glossy photo paper.
